Can you believe that? I and everyone to whom I've told the story is still laughing. I may be out of touch with the real world of business and salaries, but that range seems to me to be the sort of thing you'd pay someone fresh out of college in an entry level training position, not the top position in a department. And to require seven years of experience to boot seems the height of naiveté.
I do wish Mr. Clueless and the City of Oz the best of luck in finding a candidate with the credentials they seek to do the job they ask at the salary they're not too bashful to articulate. I suspect it's going to be a variation on: smaller, faster, cheaper—pick any two.
